Computer Monitoring

Private DetectiveKeylogger or key logger  spy software – you may have heard these terms before, but not been really sure what they meant, or how such computer monitoring techniques could help you.

Computer monitoring

This is a “sensitive” topic. Before I explain more however I need to cover some key legal and ethical points.

On the one hand you have to consider PC user privacy considerations (some of which are legal requirements) along with the need to know and benefits that flow from that knowledge. (I do not encourage or assist in law breaking. The information on this page/website is not legal advice and I do not give legal advice to clients. If you require legal advice please contact your lawyer.)

Importantly, if you do not either own the PC in question, or have authority from the owner (or other legal authority), and you examine and/or monitor the contents, then you are clearly doing something which is obviously wrong. In some cases/jurisdictions monitoring employees can be illegal.

Once you pass this “test” there are varying opinions upon what is “right” when it comes to PC monitoring. Some of these considerations are outlined below. Whilst I am aware of the depth of some of them this is not the place for a detailed discussion. (There may still be some legal considerations, depending on the situation).

Monitoring your children’s use of computers

Some people are very keen on checking what their children are doing on a PC. And with good reason. As a Private Investigator I am very aware of the problems children can experience when using a PC which is connected to the Internet. Besides the obvious inappropriate sites there are many low lifes and predators out there who use the Internet and Email as a way of contacting children. These may be sexual predators, drug dealers or other nasties.

Other people feel that the sense of a “breach of trust” between them and their children is not acceptable and are prepared to live with a higher level of risk.

People have all sorts of views either for or against monitoring their childrens’ PC use. Whilst I can suggest many reasons why it may be a good policy, the decision is up to YOU. At the very least I can make you aware of dangers which you may not already know about, some of which spring from the increasing “tech savvy” of youngsters these days. I can also advise on protection methodologies without monitoring if you want to contact me.

Monitoring your spouse

As with monitoring children, different people have all sorts of views for or against this type of monitoring. Once again, it is your decision and you will need to live with the consequences of action or inaction.

As a Private Detective I have come across many horror stories which could have been alleviated or even prevented had people been monitoring the PC. This is because spouses conducting affairs or indulging in other inappropriate or illegal activity may be using the PC. Here are some examples of what you may discover . . .

Affairs – often start on the Internet which is an increasingly popular medium for dating today. Chat programs, email and word processing software are often used for communication, even if the relationship didn’t start on the net. Affairs can have serious health implications as well as all the more obvious effects.

Viewing of inappropriate material – anything from pornography to child porn.

Other illicit or illegal contacts – arranging other illegal activity.

Gambling – if this becomes serious it can have terrible effects on the whole family.

Note: If you discover child porn on the computer you are monitoring be sure to contact the Police immediately. If possible, do not turn off the computer before receiving instructions from the Police. It is very important that the Police be informed because besides prosecuting the offender and hopefully preventing recurrence, the offender and his/her computer can provide law enforcement officers with valuable intelligence about not only the offender, but his/her network of contacts, some of which might save a child’s life; or at the very least prevent further misery. Do not confront the offender – call the Police immediately. If you do not report child abuse, then you are partly responsible for the continued suffering perpetrated by pedophile scum. (Personal note: I once discovered a pedophile using the spy software I recommend and reported him to the local Police district (for the pedophilia and bestiality), as well as to the Federal Police because of national security concerns. He was a very nasty piece of work indeed.)

Monitoring your staff

Another area which attracts different viewpoints and in which care is required. In some cases/jurisdictions monitoring employees can be illegal.

By monitoring your staff activity you will derive various benefits, some of which include:

Identification of general problem areas.
Detection and prevention of theft – both goods, money and Intellectual Property/Trade Secrets.
Detection and prevention of sexual harassment.
Improvements in productivity.
Detection and prevention of activity which may give rise to lawsuits.
Detection and prevention of commercial/industrial espionage.

Quite simply – some problems can be alleviated or prevented by monitoring staff PC use. Some of these problems, when undiscovered, can even lead to the closure/collapse of a business with the associated loss of livelihood for both the owners and other staff.

What is really going on?

Is your spouse cheating on you?
Are your children being approached by child molesters?
Are your employees stealing from you by goofing off all day online?
Do they close chat and other windows whenever you walk into the room?

You have the RIGHT TO KNOW!
You can obtain the power to uncover the truth…

You can do this by using spy software.

Spy software can help you monitor and record every detail of PC and Internet activity – in your home or in your office. Spy software has tools that record: chats, instant messages, emails sent and received, web sites visited, keystrokes typed, programs launched, peer to peer file searching and swapping – plus the equivalent of a digital surveillance tape so that you can see the EXACT sequence of EVERYTHING your family members or employees are doing on the computer. All tools work together at the same time, secretly saving all the recordings in a hidden location only you know about.

You will be able to SEE in exact detail what your spouse, kids and employees have been doing online and offline.

Advanced Warning System
In addition to monitoring and recording, the spy software I recommend uses an advanced warning system that will inform you when a PC being monitored has been used in an inappropriate manner. Through the use of keywords that you specify, you will be emailed an immediate and detailed report of when, where and how a keyword was used – every time it is typed or appears on the PC, on a website or in an email.

Internet Access Blocking, Powerful Search & MORE…
Combine Email Recording, Chat/IM Recording, Web Site Recording, Keystroke Recording and visual Snapshot Recording with Internet Access Blocking, Powerful Search and INTELLIGENT & INSTANT Notification when content you specify is encountered, and you have a comprehensive Monitoring and Surveillance method!

Complete Power. Complete Flexibility. You are in Control.
Because of comprehensive recording of just about every kind of internet activity, you will know who is using your PC, what they are doing online and ultimately… take back control of your home, office or school PC.

Relevant Statistics

The following details represent US findings and as such do not directly apply to Australia. I think you will be interested in the information however and as a Private Investigator I am aware of large scale abuse of computers here in Australia. (Note: you will see from the references that the statistics are quite old, especially in internet terms. This is because I originbally wrote this article many years ago. I have been involved with computer monitoring, and the spy software I recommend, for a long time.)

• 38% of people have engaged in explicit online sexual conversation and 50% of people have made phone contact with someone they chatted with online.3

• With an estimated 24 million children now online, one out of five have been solicited for sex in the last year.4

• More than three-quarters (77.7%) of major U.S. companies keep tabs on employees by checking their e-mail, Internet, phone calls, computer files or by videotaping them at work.1

• 31% of people have had an online conversation that has led to real-time sex.3

• An estimated 725,000 children have been “aggressively” asked for sex, defined as an offer to meet in person.4

• 63% of companies monitor workers’ Internet connections and 47% store and review employee e-mail.1

• 57% of people have used the Internet to flirt.3

• One in four children were sent pictures of people who were naked or having sex.4

• More than a quarter of companies, or 27% say that they’ve fired employees for misuse of office e-mail or Internet connections, and 65% report some disciplinary measure for those offenses.1

• Evidence proves there is a high correlation between on-line cybersex and subsequent real-time sexual affairs.3

• It is estimated that employees spend twice as much time surfing the Internet at work as they do at home.

• Relationships are being destroyed by sexual affairs that stem from online chat and other methods of communication.

• People are spending more time surfing the Internet at work than they are at home, mainly because home Web connection speeds pale in comparison to the faster connections that companies give their employees.2

• Evidence supports the existence of disinhibition, accelerated intimacy, and hyper-sexual online behaviour that can easily lead to real-time sexual affairs.3

• The most popular sites surfed at work closely mirror the most popular sites surfed at home and include: pornographic web sites, financial web sites, shopping sites, and chat sites.
